In a 'New York Minute' with... Yaroslava Shvedova

Yaroslava Shvedova

Sunday, September 2, 2012

At this time last year in New York, Yaroslava Shvedova was competing with Vania King in women’s doubles as the defending champions. The Kazak had fallen in the first-round of singles qualifying, struggling to find her form after dealing with a knee injury throughout the season.

Flash forward 52 weeks, and you’ll find a reinvigorated Shvedova, who reached her second quarterfinal at Roland Garros and became the first WTA player to record a Golden Set (winning all 24 points) at Wimbledon against Sara Errani. Though she lost her US Open second-round match to Errani’s doubles parter Roberta Vinci, Shvedova and King remain in contention to reach their third straight final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

As part of’s ‘In A New York Minute’ Q&A series, Shvedova reveals the player that would make the best talk show host, invite her to go to the Central Park Zoo and more…

Which tennis player…

Would make the funniest tour guide on a sightseeing bus?
Novak Djokovic.

Would have the best insider shopping tips?
It would have to be Serena.

Do you trust most to get you around the city on the Subway?
Me, haha. I had a situation in Moscow with my doubles partner Vania King. She had never been on the subway and was super scared to go. I took her and told her, ‘let’s go, you have to see the subway because it’s incredible. It’s like a museum.’

Would you go to for a restaurant recommendation?
It’s hard to say, because pretty much everyone knows what they want.

Would be the best talk show host?
Serena. She’s easygoing and easy talking, so I can just see her on TV.

Would be most interested in visiting the city’s museums?
I love it. I always want to learn about new things. Usually when we go, it’s with someone through the tennis event so I don’t know who would be interested in it doing it themselves.

Is next to enter the candy advertising business after Federer and Sharapova?
In general, I would say the doubles players because we’re crazy about sweets.

Would invite you to go to the Central Park Zoo?
Akgul Amanmuradova would go with me because she likes giraffes. Her nickname is Giraffe and she gets a bunch of giraffes for presents.

Would you buy a hot dog from on the street?
Probably from Vania. But knowing her, she might put something in it that’s not supposed to be there (laughter).
